What Is an Electrical Insulating Mat?
An electrical insulating mat is a rubber sheet laid on the floor in front of live electrical equipment. It is classed as Personal Protection Equipment: by insulating the operator from earth, it protects against electric shock when switchgear is operated. Vardhman® has manufactured electrical insulating mats in India since 1996.
The mat is selected by the maximum use voltage of the equipment it sits in front of. Vardhman® mats are supplied in three classes: Class A at 2.0 mm thickness for use up to 3.3 KV, Class B at 2.5 mm for up to 11 KV, and Class C at 3.0 mm for up to 33 KV. AC di-electric strength runs from 30 KV on Class A to 65 KV on Class C, with AC proof voltage up to 36 KV.
Every class is ISI marked and type tested by ERDA and CPRI, and the tests and specifications also meet BS 921, IEC 61111 and ASTM. The mats are suitable for both AC and DC applications, are flame retardant, low temperature resistant, and resistant to acid, alkali, diesel and transformer oil. The compound is a synthetic elastomer with an anti-skid finish. We supply switchgear rooms, substations and industrial plants across Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Jubail, Yanbu and the NEOM/Tabuk region.

How to Specify and Maintain an Insulating Mat
Four checks that decide whether the matting will pass an electrical safety audit.
Specify by Equipment Voltage
Select the class from the maximum use voltage of the switchgear the matting sits in front of, never from the di-electric strength figure. Class A covers up to 3.3 KV, Class B up to 11 KV and Class C up to 33 KV. Di-electric strength (30, 45 and 65 KV respectively) is a type-test value demonstrating margin, not an operating rating.
Cover the Full Working Area
The operator must be standing on the matting throughout the switching operation, including when stepping back from the panel. Measure the full width of the panel run and allow generous depth in front of it rather than ordering a narrow strip. Matting is made to order, so specify the area rather than a fixed sheet size.
Check the Environment
Substations and electrical rooms at refineries and petrochemical plants carry a real risk of oil and chemical exposure. The compound resists acid, alkali, diesel and transformer oil, retaining a minimum 80 percent of tensile strength and elongation after 48 hours immersion, and is flame retardant with an anti-skid finish.
Retain the Test Certificate
Each consignment ships with its own test certificate. Auditors normally ask for the certificate alongside the ISI mark, so file it with the panel records at handover. Where a specification references BS 921, IEC 61111 or ASTM, the tests and specifications meet those standards.

Why Buy Insulating Mats from Vardhman?
What electrical contractors and plant safety teams in Saudi Arabia look for when specifying PPE matting.
Manufacturing Since 1996
Vardhman has manufactured electrical insulating mats in India since 1996 — this is a long-standing product line, not a recent addition to the catalogue.
ISI Marked
The mats carry the ISI mark, so the class you order is backed by a certification mark rather than a supplier’s own declaration.
ERDA & CPRI Type Tested
Type tested by ERDA and CPRI, two independent Indian electrical testing authorities. Tests and specifications also meet BS 921, IEC 61111 and ASTM.
Chemical & Oil Resistant
Resistant to acid, alkali, diesel and transformer oil, retaining a minimum 80% of tensile strength and elongation after 48 hours immersion — important in refinery and substation environments.
Flame Retardant & Anti-Skid
Flame retardant with an anti-skid finish and low temperature resistance, so the mat stays safe underfoot in switchgear rooms and air-conditioned electrical buildings.

People Also Ask — Electrical Insulating Mats
Direct answers to the questions Saudi electrical and safety teams ask most.
Which class of insulating mat do I need?
Select by the maximum use voltage of the equipment the mat sits in front of. Vardhman® Class A is rated to 3.3 KV at 2.0 mm thick, Class B to 11 KV at 2.5 mm, and Class C to 33 KV at 3.0 mm. If your switchgear is 11 KV, Class B is the minimum correct specification.
What is the di-electric strength of an insulating mat?
AC di-electric strength is 30 KV for Vardhman® Class A, 45 KV for Class B and 65 KV for Class C. This is a test value demonstrating the margin above the mat’s maximum use voltage, and must never be treated as an operating rating.
Is an electrical insulating mat considered PPE?
Yes. Vardhman® High Voltage Electrical Insulating Mat is classed as Personal Protection Equipment. It is specially designed for use in front of open switchboards or high voltage equipment and is used in industrial plants and factories to protect against electric shock.
Do the mats work for DC as well as AC?
Yes. Vardhman® insulating mats are suitable for both A.C. and D.C. applications. The published proof voltage and di-electric strength figures are AC test values, and each shipment carries its own test certificate.
What standards do the mats meet?
The mats are ISI marked and type tested by ERDA and CPRI. The tests and specifications also meet BS 921, IEC 61111 and ASTM, which is what most Saudi consultants and EPC specifications reference.
Are the mats oil and chemical resistant?
Yes. The mats resist acid, alkali, diesel and transformer oil, retaining a minimum 80% of both tensile strength and elongation after 48 hours immersion. They are also flame retardant and low temperature resistant.
Frequently Asked Questions — Insulating Mats for Saudi Arabia
Vardhman Hydraulic Hoses Pvt. Ltd., the manufacturer behind the FLEXI HOSE® brand, has manufactured electrical insulating mats in India since 1996 and exports them to Saudi Arabia. Contact the export team on +91 9251554066 or mktg@flexihoseindia.com.
Three thicknesses matched to three classes: Class A at 2.0 mm for a maximum use voltage of 3.3 KV, Class B at 2.5 mm for 11 KV, and Class C at 3.0 mm for 33 KV.
Vardhman® Class C insulating mat has a maximum use voltage of 33 KV. It is 3.0 mm thick, with an AC proof voltage of 36 KV and an AC di-electric strength of 65 KV — the highest in the range.
Yes. The mats are ISI marked and type tested by ERDA and CPRI. Their tests and specifications also meet BS 921, IEC 61111 and ASTM.
All three classes carry a minimum tensile strength of 15 N/mm² and a minimum elongation of 250%. After ageing at 70±1 °C for 168 hours the mats retain a minimum 75% of both, and after 48 hours immersion in acid, alkali, diesel or transformer oil they retain a minimum 80%.
All three classes are manufactured from a synthetic elastomer compound with an anti-skid finish. The compound is flame retardant, low temperature resistant and has good ageing properties.
Mats are made to order. Tell the export team the class you need and the floor area, roll width or running length you want to cover, and we will confirm what can be produced and the lead time.
In front of open switchboards and high voltage equipment, so the operator stands on the mat while operating the equipment. It is used across industrial plants and factories as protection against electrical shock, and should cover the full working area in front of the panel.
Inspect the matting visually before each switching operation and formally as part of your periodic electrical safety audit. Replace it if you find cuts, embedded metal swarf, permanent deformation, oil softening or any loss of the anti-skid surface. Because the mat is Personal Protection Equipment, damage that would be cosmetic on ordinary flooring is a reason to withdraw it from service. Retain the original test certificate so the installed class can be verified at audit.
Yes, provided you specify to the highest voltage present. Many Saudi sites standardise on Class C, rated to a 33 KV maximum use voltage, so that a single specification covers 33 KV switchyards, 11 KV distribution and low voltage panel rooms without any risk of the wrong mat being laid in front of the wrong panel. The trade-off is cost and a thicker 3.0 mm mat underfoot; where budgets are tight, Class B at 11 KV is the usual compromise for distribution areas.
Yes. Because the mats are made in the same plant as the FLEXI HOSE® hose range, Saudi buyers can combine insulating mats with hydraulic, industrial rubber and suction and discharge hose on a single purchase order and consolidate everything into one container.
