What Is an SS Hose?
An SS hose — also specified as an SS flexible hose or stainless steel flexible hose — is a hose whose pressure-carrying element is metal rather than rubber. A longitudinally welded stainless tube is corrugated mechanically to make it flexible, then usually overlaid with a stainless wire braid that carries the pressure load while the corrugations provide the movement.
The FLEXI HOSE® product is built to EN ISO 10380, the standard for stainless steel corrugated flexible hoses. Hose material is AISI 304, AISI 321 or AISI 316L, with braiding in AISI 304 or 316L. End connections are threaded ends with welded connections, and flanges or swivel fittings are made to customer specification.
The reason a plant specifies an SS hose rather than a rubber one is that there is no elastomer in the pressure path. Nothing swells, nothing permeates, nothing ages out under UV. Across Saudi Arabia that argument is made most often at the petrochemical complexes at Jubail and Yanbu, on desalination and power plant tie-ins along both coasts, and on gas, solvent and high-purity lines where a rubber tube would be the weakest component. Where a lined flexible is preferred instead, the PTFE grade is the alternative, and the rubber families sit on the Saudi industrial hoses page.

Construction: annular corrugated flexible metal hose produced from longitudinally welded tube, corrugated mechanically, with or without braiding, to EN ISO 10380. Hose material AISI 304, AISI 321 or AISI 316L; braiding AISI 304 or 316L. Two ratios hold across every size of this SS hose range: test pressure is approximately 1.5 times working pressure, and bursting pressure is exactly four times working pressure. Service temperature is not printed in the catalogue for this product because it depends on the steel grade selected and the medium carried — it is confirmed on the quotation rather than assumed. End connections are threaded ends with welded connections; flanges and swivel fittings are made to customer specification.
How to Select an SS Flexible Hose
Five decisions. On a metallic hose the steel grade and the movement type matter more than they ever do on a rubber hose.
1. Choose the steel grade
Three are catalogued. AISI 304 is the general purpose austenitic grade. AISI 321 is titanium stabilised, which resists carbide precipitation at the weld and is the usual choice where the hose will run hot. AISI 316L adds molybdenum for chloride and general corrosion resistance, which is why it dominates coastal and seawater-adjacent installations. Braiding is available in 304 or 316L and should normally match the core.
2. Decide braided or unbraided
The catalogue offers the hose with or without braiding. The corrugated core alone gives flexibility but little pressure capability; the braid carries the pressure load. The pressures in the table above are for the braided construction. An unbraided hose is used where the duty is movement or vibration absorption at low pressure, not containment.
3. Match pressure to size
Working pressure falls steeply with size on an SS hose — 110 bar at 6 mm against 10 bar at 150 mm. That is a much steeper curve than on braided rubber hose, so a large bore metallic hose is not a high pressure component. Check the figure for your exact size rather than carrying an assumption across from a smaller one.
4. Distinguish static from flexing installation
The table gives two bend radii. S applies where the hose is installed in a bend and stays there. F applies where the hose flexes in service, and it is substantially larger — 380 mm against 820 mm at 150 mm size. Installing to the static radius on a line that actually moves is the most common cause of premature corrugation fatigue.
5. Specify the end connections
Threaded ends with welded connections are standard. Flanges and swivel fittings are produced to customer specification, so the flange standard, face type, rating and drilling need to be stated with the enquiry. On a metallic hose the ends are welded to the corrugated core, so they are not a field-fitted item and cannot be changed on site.
Where SS Hose Is Used in Saudi Arabia
Metallic flexibles are specified where an elastomer in the pressure path would be the limiting component.
Petrochemical process lines
Jubail and Yanbu run media that attack rubber and temperatures that age it. A corrugated stainless flexible removes the elastomer from the equation entirely, which is why it appears on pump connections, heat exchanger tie-ins and sample lines throughout both complexes.
Thermal expansion and vibration
Rigid pipework grows when it heats and shakes when a pump runs. A short SS hose absorbs both without the pipe stress a hard connection would transmit. This is the duty the annular corrugation is designed for, and it is where the static and flexing bend radii matter most.
Desalination and coastal plant
Chloride is the governing corrosion risk on both the Red Sea and Gulf coasts. AISI 316L is the grade specified here, in both the core and the braid, and it is the reason a coastal enquiry should always state the grade rather than leaving it open.
Gas, steam and utility connections
Where a rubber steam hose would be consumed on a service life, a metallic flexible is fitted and left. Utility headers, boiler connections and gas offtakes across Saudi industrial cities use the smaller sizes, which are also the ones carrying the highest pressures in the range.
Food, pharma and high purity
Nothing leaches from a stainless core, and it can be cleaned and passivated. For plants around Riyadh and Al-Kharj producing food, beverage or pharmaceutical product, that is often the whole specification argument, with 316L selected as standard.
Cryogenic and low temperature transfer
Austenitic stainless retains toughness where a rubber hose would go glass-hard and crack. Industrial gas handling in the Eastern Province uses metallic flexibles for this reason; confirm the grade and the intended temperature on the quotation, since the catalogue does not print a service temperature for this product.
Why Buy SS Hose Direct from the Manufacturer
Vardhman Hydraulic Hoses Pvt. Ltd. has manufactured under the FLEXI HOSE® brand since 1980, from a single plant at Bhiwadi, Rajasthan.
Factory direct, no trading layer
You buy from the plant that mixes the compound and builds the hose. That means the specification you are quoted is the specification that is manufactured, and a technical question is answered by the people who made the product rather than by a reseller.
Three steel grades, not one
AISI 304, 321 and 316L are all catalogued for the core, with 304 and 316L for the braid. A supplier offering a single grade forces the plant to over-specify on cost or under-specify on corrosion. Being able to quote the right grade for the medium is the practical value of an SS hose built to order.
Ends made to your drawing
Threaded ends with welded connections are standard, and flanges or swivel fittings are produced to customer specification. Because the ends are welded to the corrugated core rather than crimped, they have to be right at the factory — which is an argument for buying from the manufacturer rather than from stock.
Rubber and metallic from one supplier
Most plants need both. Being able to order the SS flexible hose alongside steam, hydraulic and transfer hose on one purchase order removes a vendor from the approval process, and consolidates four families into one container.
Complete export document set
Every shipment carries a commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, bill of lading and test certificates. Terms are FOB, CIF or CFR ex Nhava Sheva (JNPT) or Mundra Port, so customs clearance at the Saudi port is not held up on paperwork.
Delivery, Ports and Transit to Saudi Arabia
Shipped ex Nhava Sheva (JNPT) or Mundra Port on FOB, CIF or CFR terms. Transit times below are sea transit and exclude clearance.
| Saudi port | Serves | Transit (days) |
|---|---|---|
| Jubail | Jubail Industrial City, petrochemical complex | 8–10 |
| Yanbu | Yanbu Industrial City, Red Sea refining | 8–10 |
| Dammam | Eastern Province, Riyadh onward haulage | 7–10 |
| Jeddah | Western Region, Rabigh, Red Sea desalination | 7–9 |
| Riyadh | Inland via Dammam, dry port clearance | 9–12 |
| NEOM / Tabuk | North-west projects, Duba onward | 10–14 |
Saudi port operations are administered by Mawani, the Saudi Ports Authority, and the construction standard for this product is published by ISO. Because assemblies are made to a drawing rather than cut from a coil, an SS hose order needs the end connection detail confirmed before production starts. Sending sizes, grade and end fittings together with the first enquiry usually removes a full week from the cycle.

People Also Ask
Short answers to the questions Saudi process and maintenance buyers search for most often.
What is an SS flexible hose used for?
Absorbing thermal expansion, vibration and misalignment on rigid pipework, and carrying media that would attack a rubber tube. Typical positions are pump connections, heat exchanger tie-ins, boiler and utility offtakes, and gas or high purity lines.
What pressure can an SS hose hold?
It depends heavily on size. The braided construction is catalogued at 110 bar working at 6 mm, falling to 45 bar at 25 mm, 30 bar at 50 mm and 10 bar at 150 mm. Bursting pressure is four times working pressure at every size.
What is the difference between AISI 304, 321 and 316L?
304 is the general purpose austenitic grade. 321 is titanium stabilised and resists carbide precipitation at welds when running hot. 316L adds molybdenum for chloride and general corrosion resistance, which makes it the coastal and seawater choice.
Does an SS hose need a braid?
The hose is offered with or without braiding. The corrugated core provides flexibility but little pressure containment; the braid carries the pressure load. All pressure figures published here are for the braided construction.
Why are two bend radii quoted?
S is the static bend radius, for a hose installed in a bend and left there. F is the larger radius required where the hose flexes in service. Installing a flexing line to the static radius fatigues the corrugations early.
What end connections are available?
Threaded ends with welded connections are standard. Flanges and swivel fittings are made to customer specification, so the flange standard, rating, face and drilling should be stated with the enquiry.
SS Hose — Frequently Asked Questions
Specification, grade and export questions, answered from the FLEXI HOSE® catalogue.
It is an annular corrugated flexible metal hose produced from longitudinally welded tube that is corrugated mechanically, supplied with or without stainless steel wire braiding, to EN ISO 10380. The corrugations provide flexibility and the braid carries the pressure load.
Fifteen sizes: 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 25, 32, 40, 50, 65, 80, 100, 125 and 150 mm, with outside diameters from 9.5 mm to 172 mm. All fifteen are exported to Saudi Arabia and can be combined on one order with the rubber families.
Working pressure runs from 110 bar at 6 mm size down to 10 bar at 150 mm. Test pressure is approximately 1.5 times working pressure and bursting pressure is four times working pressure at every size. The full table of all fifteen sizes is published above.
The hose is produced in AISI 304, AISI 321 and AISI 316L. Braiding is available in AISI 304 and 316L. For coastal Saudi installations and chloride-bearing media, 316L is normally specified for both the core and the braid, and the grade should be stated on the enquiry.
The catalogue does not print a service temperature for this product, because the limit depends on the steel grade selected and the medium carried rather than on the hose construction. It is confirmed on the quotation against your stated duty. We do not publish an estimated figure.
The SS PTFE Teflon hose has a PTFE liner inside a stainless braid and is catalogued from 3.5 mm to 50 mm at −65 °C to +260 °C, with 3625 PSI / 250 BAR working pressure at 1/8 inch. It suits smaller, high pressure chemical and pharma lines. An all-metal SS hose covers the larger sizes and the movement absorption duties.
Yes. Threaded ends with welded connections are standard, and flanges or swivel fittings are produced as per customer specifications. Because the ends are welded rather than crimped, assembly length and end detail must be finalised before production and cannot be altered on site.
Both are produced. Braid coverage on the catalogued braided construction runs from 97.20 per cent at 16 mm down to 87.00 per cent at 150 mm, with wire diameters from 0.25 mm to 0.57 mm. State which construction you need, because the pressure ratings apply to the braided version.
No. The BIS licences held by Vardhman Hydraulic Hoses cover the Water Hose to IS 444-2017 Type 2 and the Air Hose to IS 446-2017.
Sea transit from Nhava Sheva or Mundra runs 8 to 10 days to Jubail and Yanbu, 7 to 10 to Dammam, 7 to 9 to Jeddah, 9 to 12 to Riyadh via Dammam and 10 to 14 to NEOM and Tabuk. Add production time for made-to-drawing assemblies; those windows exclude customs clearance.
