What Is 4SP 4SH Hose?
4SP 4SH hose is the four-spiral grade of the FLEXI HOSE® hydraulic range, built to EN 856. Construction is an inner tube of oil resistant synthetic rubber, four spiral plies of steel wire wrapped in alternating directions, and an oil and weather resistant synthetic rubber cover. The catalogued application is petroleum based hydraulic fluids.
Two things separate 4SP 4SH hose from a braided grade. The first is pressure: at 1 inch bore it is rated 5510 PSI / 380 BAR against 2400 PSI / 165 BAR for SAE 100 R2. The second is temperature: the published service range is −40 °C to +120 °C, twenty degrees above every other grade in the FLEXI HOSE® hydraulic family.
Alternating spiral plies also behave differently under impulse. A braid resists pressure but tends to unwind slightly under repeated surge; four plies laid in opposing directions balance that force, which is why 4SP 4SH hose is the grade specified on high-cycle equipment such as hydraulic breakers, forging presses and drill rig circuits. When to Specify 4SP 4SH Hose Instead of a Braided Grade
Four questions, in order. A spiral hose is the right answer to some of these and the wrong answer to others.
Media — petroleum based fluid
The catalogued application for 4SP 4SH hose is petroleum based hydraulic fluids. That is narrower than the braided SAE grades, which also cover water based fluid, fuel and lubricating oils. If the circuit runs a water glycol or a synthetic ester, confirm compatibility before ordering rather than assuming the higher grade covers more media.
Pressure — above the two-braid line
The clearest reason to move to 4SP 4SH hose is a circuit that exceeds the two-braid rating at the bore you need. At 1 inch, SAE 100 R2 stops at 2400 PSI / 165 BAR while the spiral grade carries 5510 PSI / 380 BAR. At 2 inch the gap is wider still: 1160 PSI / 80 BAR against 3630 PSI / 250 BAR.
Temperature — the +120 °C case
4SP 4SH hose is the only grade in the FLEXI HOSE® hydraulic range published to +120 °C. Where a circuit runs hot in normal service — a breaker line, a continuously loaded press, a machine working in Saudi summer with limited cooler capacity — that twenty degree margin over the braided grades is a genuine reason to specify it.
Routing — the trade-off
Four spiral plies make the hose stiffer and heavier than a braid at the same bore. Bend radius goes up, and a spiral hose forced round a tight corner at the fitting will fail at the ferrule regardless of its pressure rating. If routing is congested and pressure allows, a braided grade is the better engineering answer.
If the circuit sits below the two-braid line at your bore, SAE 100 R2 or SAE 100 R1 will route better and cost less. Specifying 4SP 4SH hose where it is not needed is a common and expensive habit.
