What Is SAE 100 R1 Hydraulic Hose?
SAE 100 R1 is the single-wire braid grade of the SAE 100 hydraulic hose series. The FLEXI HOSE® AT construction is a black oil resistant synthetic rubber lining, one braid of high tensile brass coated steel wire, and a synthetic rubber cover resistant to weather, ageing and abrasion. Service temperature is −40 °C to +100 °C across every bore.
The catalogued application is hydraulic systems running petroleum or water based fluid, plus fuel and lubricating oils. SAE 100 R1 is the grade to specify when the circuit pressure genuinely sits inside the single-braid envelope. It is lighter and easier to route than the two-braid SAE 100 R2 grade, and at 1 inch bore it carries 1275 PSI / 88 BAR against 2400 PSI / 165 BAR for R2.
Across Saudi Arabia, SAE 100 R1 is the volume grade in workshop replacement stock. Municipal fleets in Riyadh and Jeddah, agricultural equipment in Al-Kharj and the Qassim region, tipper and tanker bodies, and plant room power packs all run circuits that sit comfortably below the R1 line. Buying the correct grade rather than defaulting upward keeps assembly weight, bend radius and cost sensible. The whole family is set out on the Saudi hydraulic hose page.

SAE 100 R1 in the FLEXI HOSE® Hydraulic Range
Five hydraulic grades are manufactured in-house. The single-braid R1 grade is the entry point of the wire-reinforced range. Every figure below is taken verbatim from the FLEXI HOSE® catalogue.

The grade covered on this page. One wire braid over an oil resistant tube, for petroleum and water based hydraulic fluid, fuel and lubricating oils.

The two-braid grade. Same tube, cover and temperature range, at roughly double the working pressure. The step up when a circuit exceeds the single-braid line.

Four spiral plies wrapped in alternating directions, for the highest pressure circuits and the only grade in the range rated to +120 °C.

Textile braid rather than wire. Lighter and more flexible again, for low pressure hydraulic and return lines where pressure capability is not the constraint.

The lowest pressure grade in the series. Single textile braid for pilot lines, lubrication lines and low pressure return duty.

Choosing Between SAE 100 R1, R2 and 4SP for a Saudi Circuit
Four questions, in order. Working through them in sequence is what stops a hose being specified on bore alone.
Media — what is in the line?
SAE 100 R1 is catalogued for hydraulic systems with petroleum or water based fluid, and for fuel and lubricating oils. The tube is a black oil resistant synthetic rubber compound. Phosphate esters, strong solvents and corrosive chemicals fall outside that scope, and a UHMWPE lined hose should be considered instead.
Pressure — at your bore, not the smallest
This is where most specification errors happen. SAE 100 R1 carries 3265 PSI / 225 BAR at 1/4 inch but only 580 PSI / 40 BAR at 2 inch. A circuit running 150 BAR is fine on R1 up to 1/2 inch bore, marginal at 3/4 inch, and outside the grade at 1 inch. Check the row that matches your bore before assuming the grade.
Duty cycle — steady or impulse?
Published working pressure assumes a reasonable duty cycle. Circuits that cycle rapidly to peak, such as a tipper ram or a compaction body, consume fatigue life faster than a steady-state transfer line at the same pressure. Where cycling is severe, moving from SAE 100 R1 to R2 buys margin that a longer hose or a bigger clamp will not.
Routing, bend radius and weight
The advantage of SAE 100 R1 over a two-braid or four-spiral hose is that it bends tighter and weighs less, which matters on a machine with congested routing. If a spiral hose has been fitted where R1 is adequate, the assembly is often being forced past its bend radius at the fitting, and that is a failure mode in itself.
If the pressure answer lands above the single-braid line at your bore, step up to SAE 100 R2 or, for the highest pressure circuits, EN 856 4SP / 4SH. If it lands well below, a textile braid grade may be lighter and cheaper without any loss of service life.
SAE 100 R1 Applications Across Saudi Arabia
Where single-wire braid hydraulic hose is the right grade in the Kingdom, sector by sector.
Municipal Fleets — Riyadh and Jeddah
Refuse compaction bodies, skip loaders, road sweepers and vacuum tankers operated by Amanah contractors. Body circuits typically run between 150 and 210 BAR, which places them squarely on SAE 100 R1 at 3/8 inch and 1/2 inch bore.
Agriculture — Al-Kharj and Qassim
Tractor spool circuits, loader arms, pivot irrigation drive units and grain handling equipment across the central agricultural belt. Duty is seasonal and pressures are moderate, so a single-braid grade gives the flexibility that congested tractor routing needs.
Tipper and Tanker Bodies
Hoist circuits on aggregate tippers and fuel tankers running the Riyadh, Dammam and Jeddah corridors. Ram circuits are intermittent and moderate pressure, but the cycling is severe, so bore and duty cycle both need checking against the SAE 100 R1 table.
Workshop and Fleet Replacement Stock
Independent workshops and fleet stores across the Kingdom hold SAE 100 R1 in the common bores because it covers the largest share of repair jobs. Consistent bore-to-bore availability matters more here than headline pressure.
Plant Room and Building Services
Hydraulic power packs for dock levellers, car park barriers, gates and lifting platforms in commercial developments. These circuits are low pressure and continuous duty, and SAE 100 R1 covers them without the routing penalty of a heavier grade.
Marine and Fishing at Jazan and Jubail
Deck winches, net haulers and steering gear on small commercial vessels. Salt-laden air attacks the cover and the crimped ferrule, so the ageing and abrasion resistant cover specification matters as much as the pressure rating.

People Also Ask — SAE 100 R1 Hose in Saudi Arabia
Short, direct answers to the questions Saudi buyers ask most about single-wire braid hydraulic hose.
What does SAE 100 R1 mean?
SAE 100 R1 is the designation for a single wire braid hydraulic hose under SAE J517. The “R1” identifies the construction: one braid of high tensile steel wire over an oil resistant tube. The AT suffix on the FLEXI HOSE® product indicates a cover suited to skive-free fitting attachment.
What is the maximum pressure of a single-braid hydraulic hose?
In the FLEXI HOSE® catalogue the highest working pressure is 3265 PSI / 225 BAR at 1/4 inch nominal bore, with a minimum burst pressure of 13060 PSI / 900 BAR. Working pressure falls as bore increases, down to 580 PSI / 40 BAR at 2 inch.
Is SAE 100 R1 hose good enough for an excavator?
It depends on the circuit, not the machine. Main boom, arm and bucket circuits on modern excavators typically run 250 to 350 BAR, which is above the single-braid line at every bore, so those need R2 or a four-spiral grade. Auxiliary, pilot and return lines on the same machine are often well within SAE 100 R1.
How do I identify SAE 100 R1 hose on a machine?
Read the layline printed along the cover, which carries the grade, bore and manufacturer. If the layline has worn off, cut a scrap end and count the reinforcement layers: one wire braid indicates R1, two indicates R2, four spiral plies indicates an EN 856 grade. Never identify a hose by outside diameter alone.
Can SAE 100 R1 and R2 hose use the same fittings?
Fitting selection depends on bore, ferrule and crimp specification, not on the grade name, and the two grades have different outside diameters at the same bore. At 1/2 inch, SAE 100 R1 has a 20.00 mm mean O.D. and R2 has 22.00 mm. Confirm the crimp specification with your fitting supplier before assuming interchangeability.
What is the shelf life of hydraulic hose in Saudi storage conditions?
Store coils flat, out of direct sunlight, away from ozone-generating equipment and below the upper storage temperature recommended by the hose manufacturer. Heat and UV age the cover compound faster than time alone. Rotate stock first-in first-out and inspect the cover for surface crazing before assembly.

At 1/2 inch nominal bore the FLEXI HOSE® AT hose is rated 2320 PSI / 160 BAR working pressure with a minimum burst pressure of 9280 PSI / 640 BAR. Mean outside diameter is 20.00 mm. These are catalogue figures, published as printed rather than converted.
The reinforcement. R1 uses a single wire braid; R2 uses two. Tube compound, cover compound and the −40 °C to +100 °C service temperature are identical. At 1/2 inch bore R1 is rated 2320 PSI / 160 BAR and the two-braid grade is rated 4000 PSI / 276 BAR.
The published service temperature is −40 °C to +100 °C, and that figure applies to the fluid in the line rather than to ambient air. Hose routed near an exhaust or another radiant heat source should be sleeved, because external heat is not covered by the fluid temperature rating.
Minimum burst pressure runs from 13060 PSI / 900 BAR at 1/4 inch bore down to 2040 PSI / 140 BAR at 2 inch bore. Burst pressure is a destructive test figure and is never a working limit. Size every assembly against the working pressure column in the table on this page.
Yes. The catalogued application covers hydraulic systems with petroleum or water based fluid, as well as fuel and lubricating oils. The tube is a black oil resistant synthetic rubber compound.
