What Is an SS Hose?

An SS hose is a flexible metallic hose made from a longitudinally welded stainless steel tube that is mechanically corrugated, with or without an outer wire braid. FLEXI HOSE® builds every SS hose to EN ISO 10380 for stainless steel corrugated flexible hoses, in AISI 304, AISI 321 or AISI 316L, with braiding in AISI 304 or 316L and threaded, flanged or swivel end connections made to the customer specification.

The reason a plant reaches for an SS hose rather than a rubber hose is that the working limits are set by metal rather than by an elastomer. Rubber hoses stop at the temperature and chemical tolerance of the tube compound. A metallic SS hose carries steam, thermal oil, hot condensate, cryogenic media and aggressive chemicals on the same construction, and it absorbs pipework movement, misalignment and vibration where a rigid line would fatigue.

In the United Arab Emirates that duty profile is concentrated in a small number of very large plants. The Ruwais refining and petrochemical complex, the aluminium smelters at Jebel Ali and Al Taweelah, the gas-fired power and desalination stations along both coasts, and the bunkering and tank-farm terminals at Fujairah all run high-temperature and high-vibration connections where an SS hose is the standard fitting. The rubber equivalents are set out on the UAE industrial hoses page.

SS Hose Grades in the FLEXI HOSE® Range

Three stainless grades cover the whole of the UAE duty range. Every figure below is taken verbatim from the FLEXI HOSE® catalogue.

SS hose in AISI 304 stainless steel for general industrial service
AISI 304 SS Hose
EN ISO 10380 · general service

The default grade for general industrial service. AISI 304 gives good corrosion resistance and the widest availability, and it is the grade most plant standards name where the medium is steam, hot water, compressed air or a non-chlorinated process fluid. Braiding is supplied in AISI 304 to match.

SS hose in AISI 321 stabilised stainless steel for high temperature service
AISI 321 SS Hose
EN ISO 10380 · stabilised grade

A titanium-stabilised grade specified where the connection sits at sustained high temperature and intergranular attack after welding is the concern. Refinery, smelter and boiler-house connections are the usual application. The same fifteen sizes and the same pressure table apply.

SS hose in AISI 316L stainless steel for chloride and chemical service
AISI 316L SS Hose
EN ISO 10380 · chloride service

The grade to specify in the Gulf where chlorides are unavoidable — seawater cooling, brine, desalination reject and coastal atmospheres. Molybdenum content raises pitting resistance, and the low carbon variant limits sensitisation at the weld. Braiding is available in 316L so the whole assembly is consistent.

Static bend radius applies where the SS hose is installed in a fixed bend and does not move in service. Flexible bend radius applies where the assembly flexes repeatedly. Designing to the static figure on a moving line is the most common cause of premature braid failure.

Braid coverage falls from 97.2% at the small sizes to 87% at 150 mm. That is normal for a braided metallic hose and it is the reason the pressure curve falls away so steeply with size. Corrugation pitch also opens up with diameter, which is why the large sizes need a much larger bend radius. Test certificates are issued against every assembly and are supplied with the shipment.

How to Select an SS Hose

Four decisions, taken in this order. Getting the order wrong is what produces a technically correct hose that fails in service.

1. Start with the medium, not the pressure

The medium decides the stainless grade before anything else is considered. Steam, hot water, thermal oil, compressed air and most hydrocarbon streams sit comfortably on AISI 304. Sustained high temperature with welded connections points to AISI 321. Anything carrying chlorides — seawater, brine, desalination reject, coastal wash-down, many cleaning chemicals — needs AISI 316L, and in the UAE that covers a larger share of duties than most specifiers expect, because the coastal atmosphere alone is aggressive enough to pit 304 over time. Choosing the grade after the size has been fixed leads to a hose that is correctly rated and wrongly alloyed.

2. Then set the size against the working pressure

Working pressure on an SS hose falls sharply as bore rises: 110 bar at 6 mm, 45 bar at 25 mm, 30 bar at 50 mm, 16 bar at 100 mm and 10 bar at 150 mm. A specifier who sizes the hose to match the pipe bore and then checks the pressure will often find the largest sizes cannot hold the line pressure. Where that happens the answer is usually two smaller assemblies in parallel rather than one large one. Test pressure and bursting pressure are printed in the table above so the safety margin is visible rather than assumed.

3. Decide whether the assembly is static or flexing

An SS hose installed as a fixed offset to take up misalignment is a static installation and can be designed to the static bend radius. An SS hose connecting a vibrating pump, a thermally expanding header or a moving loading arm flexes in service, and must be designed to the flexible bend radius, which is roughly three times the static figure at the small sizes and more than double at the large ones. This single decision does more to determine service life than the choice of grade.

4. Fix the end connections last

Threaded ends, welded connections, flanges and swivel fittings are all supplied to the customer specification. Fittings are decided last because they follow from the first three choices — a 316L assembly on a chloride line should not be terminated in a 304 flange, and a flexing assembly needs a swivel at one end if the movement has any rotational component. Send the drawing or the existing part number with the enquiry and the assembly is built to it.

If the duty turns out to be rubber-hose duty after all, the UAE steam hose page covers the two braided steam grades and the UAE hydraulic hose range covers the SAE and EN 856 grades.

SS Hose Applications Across the UAE

Where a metallic hose is specified in the Emirates, and why.

Ruwais Refining and Petrochemicals

Steam headers, thermal oil circuits, hot condensate returns and reactor connections at the Al Ruwais Industrial City complex run above what any rubber tube will take. Metallic assemblies in 304 and 321 are the standard fitting, and turnaround schedules make stocked sizes worth holding.

Aluminium Smelting at Jebel Ali and Al Taweelah

Potline and casthouse service exposes connections to radiant heat, molten-metal splash risk and continuous vibration. A braided SS hose survives conditions that destroy an elastomer cover, and the 321 grade is the usual specification near the furnaces.

Power and Desalination

The gas-fired stations and desalination trains at Jebel Ali, Al Taweelah and Layyah run steam, hot water and brine on the same site. Brine and reject streams are 316L duty; steam and boiler feed are 304 or 321. Both grades ship in the same order.

Fujairah Bunkering and Tank Farms

Loading arms, manifold connections and vapour-return lines flex with every vessel and every tide. Flexible-radius assemblies with swivel ends are the correct build here, and Fujairah is the fastest UAE port to reach from India at three to five days.

Ship Repair and Marine

Dubai Maritime City and the Fujairah yards need short metallic assemblies for engine-room steam, fuel and lube connections, usually against a drawing and against the clock. Chloride exposure makes 316L the default rather than the exception.

District Cooling and Building Services

Chilled-water risers, pump connections and expansion take-offs in Dubai and Abu Dhabi district cooling plants use small-bore metallic assemblies to absorb movement. The 6 mm to 25 mm sizes carry the highest pressures in the range and cover almost all of this work.

Free-Zone Distribution and Re-Export

Distributors in Jebel Ali Free Zone and Hamriyah supply several end markets from one warehouse. Holding the full fifteen-size ladder in one grade is usually more useful than holding three grades in a few sizes, because the size is what the customer cannot wait for.

Gas Processing and Industrial Gases

Cryogenic and high-pressure gas transfer relies on metallic flexibles because the temperature range defeats rubber at both ends. An SS hose handles the same connection from ambient to sustained high temperature without a compound change.

Why Buy SS Hose Direct from the Manufacturer

Vardhman Hydraulic Hoses Pvt. Ltd. has manufactured under the FLEXI HOSE® brand since 1980.

02

Factory Direct, No Trading Layer

You buy from the plant at F-621, RIICO Industrial Area, Bhiwadi. That means the specification you agree is the specification that is made, quantities are set by your requirement rather than by a stockist's minimum, and the technical answer comes from the people who built the hose.

03

The Whole Size Ladder, Not a Fragment

Fifteen sizes from 6 mm to 150 mm in one order. UAE distributors serving free-zone re-export need the range rather than the depth, because a customer who cannot get 32 mm will change supplier for the whole basket rather than for one size.

04

Three Grades on One Purchase Order

AISI 304, 321 and 316L are all catalogued, so a site running steam, smelter and brine duties does not need three vendors. Braiding is matched to the tube grade, and end connections are made to your drawing rather than to a fixed catalogue of fittings.

05

Five Ports, Three to Seven Days

Fujairah at three to five days is the fastest UAE arrival from Nhava Sheva or Mundra. Jebel Ali, Khalifa Port and Port Khalid follow at four to six, Ras Al Khaimah at five to seven. Short transit is what makes stocking a full size ladder practical rather than expensive.

People Also Ask

Short answers to the questions buyers search before they enquire.

What is an SS hose used for?

An SS hose carries steam, thermal oil, hot condensate, cryogenic media, gases and aggressive chemicals, and absorbs vibration and misalignment between rigid pipework. It is specified where temperature or chemistry exceeds what a rubber tube will take.

What pressure can a stainless steel flexible hose take?

FLEXI HOSE® catalogues 110 bar working pressure at 6 mm, falling with size to 45 bar at 25 mm, 30 bar at 50 mm, 16 bar at 100 mm and 10 bar at 150 mm. Bursting pressure is four times working pressure at every size.

Which stainless grade should I specify in the Gulf?

AISI 316L wherever chlorides are present — seawater, brine, desalination reject or coastal atmosphere. AISI 304 for general steam, hot water and hydrocarbon service, and AISI 321 where sustained high temperature meets welded connections.

Is SS hose the same as SS braided hose?

Braiding is an option, not a separate product. The corrugated stainless tube can be supplied with or without an outer braid. The braid is what contains the pressure, so the catalogued pressure figures apply to braided assemblies.

What is the minimum bend radius of an SS hose?

It depends on size and on whether the assembly is static or flexing. At 25 mm the static radius is 80 mm and the flexible radius is 205 mm. At 150 mm the figures are 380 mm and 820 mm. Both are printed in the size table above.

How long does delivery to Dubai take?

Sailing time to Jebel Ali is four to six days from Nhava Sheva or Mundra, and three to five days to Fujairah. Those are indicative sailing times; customs clearance at the destination is additional.

Bar. Working, test and bursting pressure for the SS hose range are all catalogued in bar, confirmed by the Director. Test pressure is approximately 1.5 times working pressure and bursting pressure is four times working pressure at every one of the fifteen sizes.

Threaded ends and welded connections are standard, and flanges or swivel fittings are made to customer specification. Send a drawing or an existing part number with the enquiry. On a chloride duty the fittings should match the tube grade rather than defaulting to 304.

Because braid coverage falls as diameter rises — 97.2% at 16 mm against 87% at 150 mm — while the area the pressure acts on grows with the square of the bore. This is normal for braided metallic hose and it is why large-bore assemblies are often better replaced by two smaller ones in parallel.

Often, and it is the usual choice above the rubber temperature limit. FLEXI HOSE® rubber steam hose is rated to +195 °C on the one wire braid grade and +232 °C on the two wire braid grade. Above that, or where the line vibrates continuously, a metallic assembly is the correct specification.

Yes. Test certificates are issued against every assembly and travel with the shipment alongside the commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and bill of lading. Testing is done in the in-house laboratory on equipment calibrated by NABL-accredited bodies.

Fujairah is fastest at three to five days and suits marine and bunkering work. Jebel Ali, Khalifa Port and Port Khalid are four to six days, and Ras Al Khaimah five to seven. Consignments can be split across ports on one order where the end users sit in different emirates.

An SS hose has a stainless tube in contact with the medium. A PTFE hose has a PTFE core under a stainless braid, so the wetted surface is polymer rather than metal. Choose PTFE where the medium attacks stainless steel, and choose metallic where temperature and mechanical duty dominate.
