What Is a Hydraulic Hose?
A hydraulic hose is a wire-reinforced rubber hose that carries pressurised fluid between a pump, a valve and an actuator. Every grade is defined by its reinforcement — textile braid, one or two wire braids, or four spiral wire layers — and by a published working and burst pressure at each bore. Fitting a grade below the circuit pressure is the most common cause of failure in service.
Flexihose India manufactures five hydraulic hose grades for the UAE market: SAE 100 R1 AT, SAE 100 R2 AT, SAE 100 R3, SAE 100 R6 and EN 856 4SP/4SH. Service temperature is −40 °C to +100 °C on the four SAE grades and −40 °C to +120 °C on the four-spiral grade. Full bore and pressure tables for every grade are set out below.
The UAE is served through five entry points with materially different transit windows — Fujairah at 3–5 days is the fastest sea route we operate to any export market, while Jebel Ali, Khalifa Port and Port Khalid run 4–6 days. The four spiral pressure curve is not monotonic as bore increases: 3/4 inch is catalogued at 6090 PSI / 420 BAR, above both 1/2 inch at 6020 PSI / 415 BAR and 5/8 inch at 5080 PSI / 350 BAR. These are published exactly as catalogued rather than smoothed. Specify by the figure for the bore you need, not by the trend.
How to Select a Hydraulic Hose Grade
Four questions, in order. Answer them and the grade is decided before anyone opens a price list.
1. What is the circuit pressure?
Take the maximum working pressure of the circuit, not the average. Match it to the catalogued working pressure at the bore you need. Below 400 PSI / 28 BAR at 1/2 inch, SAE 100 R6 is sufficient. Up to 1000 PSI / 69 BAR, use R3. Above that, move to a wire braid grade — R1 to 2320 PSI / 160 BAR at 1/2 inch, R2 to 4000 PSI / 276 BAR, and EN 856 4SP/4SH to 6020 PSI / 415 BAR.
2. Is the duty impulse or steady?
Steady pressure and impulse pressure are different problems. Hydraulic breakers, presses and heavy earthmoving cycle the hose thousands of times a shift. That is four spiral territory. A steady-pressure power pack at the same nominal pressure can often run a two wire braid grade instead.
3. What is the fluid and the temperature?
All five grades take petroleum and water-based hydraulic fluid, fuel and lubricating oils. Four of the five are rated −40 °C to +100 °C. Only EN 856 4SP/4SH is catalogued to +120 °C, so sustained high oil temperature points to the four spiral grade regardless of pressure.
4. What bore and what O.D. clearance?
Bore sets flow; outside diameter sets whether the assembly fits the routing. The two figures move independently between grades — at 1 inch bore the mean O.D. is 35.00 mm on R1, 37.50 mm on R2 and 38.00 mm on the four spiral grade. On a congested machine that 3 mm decides the job.

Container terminal handling
Jebel Ali and Khalifa Port run reach stackers, straddle carriers and quay cranes continuously. Boom, spreader and steering circuits sit in the SAE 100 R2 AT band, and terminal maintenance teams typically hold R2 in 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch and 1 inch as standing stock.
Ship repair and drydock
Dubai Drydocks and the Sharjah and Ajman yards run hydraulic power packs, deck machinery and mooring winches. Duty is steady rather than impulse, so R1 and R2 cover most of it, with four spiral grade reserved for hydraulic bolt tensioning and press work.
Construction and tower crane plant
Dubai and Abu Dhabi construction fleets are the largest single consumer of hydraulic hose in the country. Excavator boom and bucket circuits, concrete pumps and piling rigs are R2 and four spiral duty, and hose life is shortened by ambient heat as much as by pressure.

Four grades follow the SAE 100 series published by SAE International — R1 AT, R2 AT, R3 and R6. The four spiral grade follows EN 856 4SP/4SH.
