What Is a Steam Hose?

A steam hose is built to carry saturated steam continuously without the tube hardening, cracking or delaminating. The lining and cover are heat resistant EPDM rubber compound, and the reinforcement is a braid of high tensile brass coated steel wire — brass coated because the bond between rubber and steel has to survive thermal cycling that would separate an ordinary wire. Both FLEXI HOSE® grades are catalogued at a burst pressure ten times working pressure, which is a far wider margin than the four times applied across the hydraulic range.

UAE demand for this product concentrates in two places that pull in opposite directions. Ruwais and the Abu Dhabi downstream complex run continuous process steam where the hose is installed, lagged and left, so the priority is service life and documentation. Ship repair at Dubai Maritime City and the Fujairah anchorage runs steam intermittently for tank cleaning and line blowing, where the same steam hose is dragged across a deck, coupled and uncoupled daily and treated as a consumable. One is a specification decision and the other is a stocking decision.

The two grades exist because +195 °C and +232 °C are genuinely different duties. The 1 wire braid steam hose covers 1/2 inch to 2 inch at 145 PSI / 10 BAR; the 2 wire braid steam hose stops at 1.1/4 inch but reaches 250 PSI / 17 BAR. Where even +232 °C is not enough, or the medium is chemically aggressive rather than simply hot, the UAE PTFE hose page covers the lined metallic option to +260 °C.

Steam Hose Size and Pressure Tables — Both Grades

PSI and BAR pairs are published exactly as catalogued and are never recalculated. Burst pressure is ten times working pressure on both steam hose grades.

Working pressure does not fall with bore on either steam hose grade, which is unusual and is worth noting when comparing against a hydraulic or PTFE size ladder where pressure drops steeply as the bore opens up. What changes with size is the outside diameter, and the second braid adds roughly 2.5 mm across the range — a 1 inch 1 wire braid steam hose measures 35.50 mm mean O.D. against 38.00 mm for the 2 wire braid. That difference matters when the hose has to pass through an existing gland or clamp. The catalogue lists the 2 wire braid steam hose only up to 1.1/4 inch; above that bore, only the 10 bar grade is available.

How to Select a Steam Hose

Selecting a steam hose runs temperature, pressure, bore, coupling method, then duty cycle. On this product the coupling step causes more failures than the specification does.

01

1. Take the saturated steam temperature, not the gauge reading

Saturated steam temperature follows pressure. A line running at 17 bar is at roughly the ceiling of the 2 wire braid steam hose, so the temperature figure and the pressure figure have to be checked together rather than treated as two independent limits with slack in each.

02

2. Choose the grade on temperature first

The 1 wire braid steam hose reaches +195 °C and the 2 wire braid reaches +232 °C. That 37 °C gap is the real decision. If the process sits above +195 °C at any point, including start-up and blow-down, the higher grade is the only catalogued option.

03

3. Check the bore is available in that grade

The 1 wire braid steam hose covers 1/2 inch to 2 inch. The 2 wire braid stops at 1.1/4 inch. A 1.1/2 inch or 2 inch requirement above +195 °C cannot be met from this range, and substituting a smaller bore to reach the temperature rating is not a solution — it changes the flow.

04

4. Confirm the outside diameter against the fitting

The second braid adds around 2.5 mm to the O.D. at every size. If the steam hose is replacing an existing assembly, check the clamp, gland or ferrule against the mean O.D. column before ordering rather than at installation.

05

5. Specify the coupling method deliberately

Steam service does not forgive a push-on connection. Interlocking or bolted clamps rated for the working pressure, fitted to the correct O.D., are what keep the assembly safe through thermal cycling. This is the most common point of failure on a steam hose in service, and it is almost always an installation decision rather than a product one.

06

6. Match the duty cycle to the stocking plan

Continuous process steam and intermittent tank cleaning wear a steam hose differently. Fixed installations justify buying to specification once; yard and drydock work justifies holding two or three common bores in stock, because the replacement is needed the same day rather than next quarter.

Where Steam Hose Is Used Across the UAE

Refineries, shipyards, chemical plants, steel mills, foundries and heavy industry — the catalogued application list, read against what the Emirates actually run.

Ruwais refining and downstream

Process steam at the Al Dhafra complex is continuous rather than intermittent, so the specification argument is about service life and certification rather than purchase price. Fixed steam hose assemblies on tracing, jacketing and pump connections are installed, lagged and expected to run for years between changes.

Ship repair and tank cleaning

Drydock work at Dubai Maritime City and the Fujairah anchorage uses steam for tank cleaning, line blowing and cargo heating. Here the same steam hose is a consumable: dragged across steel decks, coupled and uncoupled daily, and replaced on condition rather than on schedule. Stock availability matters more than lead time.

Free zone re-export and distributor stock

Jebel Ali and Khalifa Industrial Zone traders hold steam hose for onward movement into the wider Gulf and East Africa. Both grades in coil form, in the bores that move, is what allows a free zone warehouse to serve a refinery order and a shipyard order from the same rack.

Food and beverage processing

The Sharjah and Dubai Industrial City food cluster uses steam for sterilisation, clean-in-place and jacketed vessel heating. Duty is cyclical rather than continuous, which is harder on the rubber-to-steel bond than steady heat, so the brass coated wire braid is doing real work here.

Aluminium, steel and foundry operations

Cast house and rolling operations at Jebel Ali and Al Taweelah, and the steel and foundry plants across the Northern Emirates, are exactly the heavy industrial duty the catalogue names. Radiant heat around the installation matters as much as the medium inside the steam hose.

Chemical plants and asphalt handling

Steam tracing keeps viscous products moving. Asphalt, bitumen and heavy fuel handling at Fujairah and along the Abu Dhabi corridor rely on it, and the flexible connections in those circuits are where a steam hose replaces fixed pipework.

Why Buy Steam Hose Direct from the Manufacturer

Vardhman Hydraulic Hoses Pvt. Ltd. has manufactured under the FLEXI HOSE® brand since 1980, from a single plant at Bhiwadi, Rajasthan.

02

Factory direct, no trading layer

You buy from the plant that mixes the compound and builds the hose. That means the specification you are quoted is the specification that is manufactured, and a technical question is answered by the people who made the product rather than by a reseller.

03

Both grades from one production line

Refinery and shipyard requirements land on the same UAE distributor, and they are different products. Holding both the 10 bar and 17 bar steam hose from a single supplier means one compound specification, one test certificate format and one set of tolerances across a mixed rack.

04

Three ports, three lead times

Fujairah at 3–5 days, Jebel Ali and Khalifa Port at 4–6 and Ras Al Khaimah at 5–7 give genuine routing choice. A steam hose replacement for a vessel at the Fujairah anchorage does not have to route through Jebel Ali and then back by road.

05

In-house testing on calibrated equipment

Test certificates are produced in the company laboratory, and all test equipment is calibrated by NABL-accredited bodies. On a product with a ten times burst margin, the certificate is the evidence that the margin exists rather than a formality.

06

Complete export document set

Every shipment carries a commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, bill of lading and test certificates. Terms are FOB, CIF or CFR ex Nhava Sheva (JNPT) or Mundra Port, so customs clearance is not held up on paperwork.

Fujairah lies outside the Strait of Hormuz, which is why it is usually the fastest route and why it suits a steam hose order for a vessel under repair. Both grades ship as coil stock rather than made-up assemblies, so consignments consolidate readily with the air, water and hydraulic families into one container.

Four Product Families, 26 Catalogued Products

Both steam hose grades sit inside a full catalogue exported from one plant, so a mixed order ships as one consignment.

People Also Ask

Short answers to the questions UAE refinery, marine and maintenance buyers search for most often.

What is a steam hose used for?

Refineries, shipyards, chemical plants, steel mills, foundries and heavy industrial applications, per the catalogued application list. In practice that means process steam, steam tracing, tank cleaning, line blowing and jacketed vessel heating.

What is the maximum temperature?

+232 °C on the 2 wire braid grade and +195 °C on the 1 wire braid. Both are rated down to −40 °C. Above +232 °C the catalogue moves to the PTFE lined product, which reaches +260 °C.

What is the difference between 1 wire and 2 wire braid?

One braid of brass coated steel wire against two. The second braid raises working pressure from 145 PSI / 10 BAR to 250 PSI / 17 BAR and temperature from +195 °C to +232 °C, but restricts the range to 1.1/4 inch maximum bore instead of 2 inch.

What standards does it meet?

Both grades exceed IS 10655 — Type 2 for the 1 wire braid and Type 3 for the 2 wire braid. Exceeding a standard is a different claim from conforming to it, and neither steam hose grade carries a BIS licence; the licensed products in the catalogue are the water and air hoses.

Why is burst pressure ten times working pressure?

Because steam service is unforgiving and the failure mode is dangerous. The catalogue applies a ten times margin on both steam hose grades, against four times across the hydraulic range. Burst is a destructive test figure, not an operating allowance.

Which UAE port is fastest?

Fujairah at 3–5 days from Nhava Sheva or Mundra, because it sits outside the Strait of Hormuz. Jebel Ali, Khalifa Port and Port Khalid are 4–6 days and Ras Al Khaimah is 5–7.

Steam Hose — Frequently Asked Questions

Specification, construction and export questions, answered from the FLEXI HOSE® catalogue.

The lining is a heat resistant EPDM rubber compound. The reinforcement is a braid of high tensile brass coated steel wire, single on the 10 bar grade and double on the 17 bar grade. The cover is EPDM resistant to heat, ageing and ozone. Brass coating is used because the rubber-to-steel bond has to survive repeated thermal cycling.

The 1 wire braid steam hose is catalogued in six bores: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1.1/4, 1.1/2 and 2 inch. The 2 wire braid is catalogued in four: 1/2, 3/4, 1 and 1.1/4 inch. The catalogue does not list the 2 wire braid grade above 1.1/4 inch.

No. Working pressure is flat across every catalogued size on both grades: 145 PSI / 10 BAR throughout the 1 wire braid range and 250 PSI / 17 BAR throughout the 2 wire braid range. That is different from the hydraulic and PTFE products, where pressure drops steeply as bore rises.

Mean O.D. on the 1 wire braid runs 21.50, 29.00, 35.50, 42.50, 50.50 and 64.50 mm. On the 2 wire braid it runs 24.00, 31.00, 38.00 and 45.00 mm. Comparing the same bore across grades shows roughly 2.5 mm of difference, which is enough to matter at an existing clamp or gland.

The catalogue specifies these grades for steam service. Hot water within the stated temperature and pressure limits is a related duty, but thermal oil and other media are a compound compatibility question rather than a temperature one. Send the medium with the enquiry and it will be answered against the compound specification rather than assumed.

Interlocking or bolted clamp systems rated for the working pressure and matched to the mean outside diameter of the grade being used. Push-on fittings are not appropriate for steam. Coupling failure is the most common in-service problem on this product and it is nearly always an installation decision rather than a manufacturing one.

Coil stock. That is one of the practical differences from the PTFE product, which is built to length as an assembly. Coil supply is why a UAE distributor can hold two or three bores and cut to requirement, and why a shipyard can replace a damaged length the same day.

Yes. Shipments are made on FOB, CIF or CFR terms ex Nhava Sheva (JNPT) or Mundra Port and consigned to whichever UAE port and address you nominate, free zone or mainland. Every consignment carries commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, bill of lading and test certificates.

Test certificates are issued from the in-house laboratory, where all equipment is calibrated by NABL-accredited bodies. They travel with the shipment and can be supplied before despatch on request. On a product carrying a ten times burst margin the certificate is the evidence for that margin.

Grade, nominal bore, total coil length, working pressure, peak steam temperature, coupling type and the discharge port. With those seven items a steam hose quotation can be issued without a clarification round, which is what makes same-day turnaround possible.
