What Is an Oil Suction Hose?
An oil suction hose is a large bore rubber hose with a nitrile tube and an embedded steel helix, built so it can be used on the suction side of a pump without collapsing. The FLEXI HOSE® construction is a smooth black NBR rubber compound tube, high tensile synthetic plies reinforced with a helix steel wire and a copper wire, and a black smooth fabric marked NBR/PVC cover that is oil, fuel, weather, ozone and abrasion resistant.
Two things separate it from a water grade. The tube compound is nitrile rather than SBR, so it survives fuel and mineral oils rather than being softened by them, and the catalogued limit is aromatic content up to 50%. The copper wire in the reinforcement is the second: it is there so a continuous electrical path can be made through the assembly, which is why an oil suction hose is specified for fuel transfer rather than an ordinary oil-resistant discharge hose.
In the United Arab Emirates the centre of gravity for this product is Fujairah. The anchorage is one of the world's largest bunkering locations, and the tank farms behind it move fuel oil, marine gas oil and blend components continuously. The grade this page covers. Smooth black NBR tube, helix steel wire plus a copper wire, NBR/PVC fabric marked cover. Eleven bores, 10 bar working, 30 bar burst, 0.9 bar vacuum, −20 °C to +80 °C, for fuel and mineral oils with aromatics up to 50%.
Identical bores and identical ratings, but the tube is SBR and it will not survive fuel. It is the cheaper hose and it is the wrong hose for hydrocarbons. Water and sewage service only, −30 °C to +80 °C, in 20 metre coils.
Where the medium is a solvent or an aggressive chemical rather than a fuel, the polyethylene liner covers a far wider media set. Eight bores 3/4 inch to 4 inch, 240 PSI / 16 BAR working, 720 PSI / 48 BAR burst, −20 °C to +120 °C.
An oil suction hose is a transfer product, not a pressure product. Above 10 bar on petroleum or water based fluid the answer is a braided or spiral hydraulic hose — SAE 100 R1, R2, R3 and R6 or EN 856 4SP and 4SH, from 190 PSI to 6090 PSI.

Note the outside diameters. An oil suction hose is consistently a little thicker in the wall than the water grade at the same bore — 63 mm against 61 mm at 2 inch, 171 mm against 166 mm at 6 inch, 225 mm against 223 mm at 8 inch. Clamp and coupling sizing must be taken from this table rather than from the water figures, which is a common source of a wrong bill of materials.

The aromatic content figure is the specification limit that gets checked in a technical evaluation. Petrol, diesel, kerosene, marine gas oil and most mineral oils sit inside 50% aromatics. Solvent blends and some aromatic-rich streams do not, and for those the polyethylene lined chemical grade is the correct product rather than this one. How to Select a Fuel Transfer Hose
Four decisions in order. On fuel duty the first two carry almost all the risk.
1. Check the aromatic content before anything else
The catalogued limit is 50% aromatics. That number is the boundary of the NBR tube's suitability, and it is not a guideline. Below it the tube performs as specified; above it the compound swells and softens, and the failure is progressive rather than sudden, which is worse. Get the product data sheet for the actual fluid, not the generic name — two products both called solvent naphtha can sit on either side of the line. Where the fluid is outside the limit, the answer is the polyethylene lined chemical grade, not a bigger oil suction hose.
2. Confirm the hose is genuinely on the suction side
If a pump draws through the hose it needs the helix and the 0.9 bar vacuum rating. Tanker offloading, tank farm decanting and bowser filling almost always involve suction at some point in the cycle, even where the operator describes the line as a delivery hose. An unreinforced oil-resistant hose collapses the first time the pump primes against a closed valve, and on fuel duty that is a spill rather than an inconvenience.
3. Plan the electrical continuity path
The reinforcement carries a copper wire in addition to the helix steel wire. That is a construction feature intended to allow a continuous path through the assembly, and it only does its job if the couplings are fitted so the path is actually made and then verified on site. Specify the coupling type with the order and state that continuity is required, so the assembly is built for it rather than adapted afterwards.
4. Size the bore and fix the coil length
Oil suction hose bore follows flow rate and acceptable suction-side friction loss. Because working pressure is a flat 10 bar / 150 psi at every size, going one bore up to protect the pump prime costs nothing in rating. Eleven sizes from 19 mm to 203 mm give a fine enough ladder to do that. Standard oil suction hose supply is 20 metre coils at every bore, with or without end connections made to your specification.
