What Is a Water Suction Hose?
A water suction hose is a large bore rubber hose reinforced with a helical steel wire so it will not collapse when a pump pulls a vacuum on it. The FLEXI HOSE® construction is a smooth black SBR rubber tube, high tensile synthetic plies with helical steel wire, and an abrasion and weather resistant SBR/EPDM cover in a black wrap finish with a plain outer face.
The distinction that matters on site is between suction and discharge. A discharge hose only has to contain pressure from the inside. A water suction hose also has to resist collapse from the outside when the pump is drawing, which is what the embedded wire helix is for. The catalogued vacuum rating is 0.9 bar, and the catalogued application is conveying water and sewage discharge in mining, construction and industry.
In the United Arab Emirates the dominant duty is not irrigation but groundwater. The water table across the coastal strip from Abu Dhabi through Dubai to Sharjah sits close to the surface and is saline, so almost every basement, tunnel, pile cap and utility trench needs continuous dewatering before concrete goes in. Water Suction Hose in the FLEXI HOSE® 10 Bar Series
Four large bore grades share the 10 bar / 150 psi rating and the 20 metre coil length. They differ in tube compound, temperature range and whether they are vacuum rated. Every figure is taken verbatim from the FLEXI HOSE® catalogue.
The grade this page covers. Smooth black SBR tube, helical steel wire, SBR/EPDM cover. Eleven bores, 10 bar working, 30 bar burst, 0.9 bar vacuum, −30 °C to +80 °C. The widest temperature range in the 10 bar series.
Discharge only. No helix, so it flattens for storage and transport but must never be used on the suction side. Bores 40 mm to 203 mm, smooth black SBR tube, −30 °C to +80 °C. Not vacuum rated, and that is a specification limit rather than an omission.
Same eleven bores and the same 10 bar / 0.9 bar ratings, but with an NBR tube for fuel and mineral oils having aromatic content up to 50%. Putting fuel through an SBR-lined water suction hose destroys the tube, so the two are not interchangeable.
Where the water is carrying solids — sand, slurry, aggregate — a highly abrasion resistant NR/SBR tube is the right answer. Bores 25 mm to 203 mm, 0.9 bar vacuum, −20 °C to +75 °C. Dredging spoil and quarry washings belong here rather than on the plain water grade.

The 8 inch size is catalogued at 10 or 20 metre coils; every smaller bore is 20 metres. Outside diameter runs from 29 mm at the 19 mm bore to 223 mm at the 203 mm bore, so the wall gets substantially heavier as the hose gets larger. An 8 inch water suction hose coil needs mechanical handling on site. Plan the lift before the delivery arrives.

The −30 °C lower limit is the widest in the 10 bar series and is irrelevant in the Emirates. The +80 °C upper limit is not: a black hose lying on an open site in July reaches surface temperatures well above ambient, and hot process water or washdown returns can push a line closer to the limit than the pumped temperature alone suggests.
How to Select a Water Suction Hose
Four decisions in order. The first one is the one most often skipped.
1. Establish whether the hose is on the suction side at all
If the pump pulls through it, it needs the wire helix and it needs the 0.9 bar vacuum rating. If it only carries pumped water away, a lay flat discharge hose is lighter, cheaper and easier to store. The failure mode when this is got wrong is immediate and obvious: an unreinforced hose flattens the moment the pump primes. A water suction hose costs more precisely because of the helix that stops it.
2. Check what is in the water
Clean water, groundwater and sewage all sit comfortably on the SBR tube. Sand, silt, aggregate or slurry do not — abrasive solids cut an SBR tube far faster than clean water wears it, and the correct product is then the bulk material grade rather than a plain water suction hose with its NR/SBR abrasion resistant tube. On a UAE dewatering job this distinction is easy to miss because the groundwater looks clean until the pile bore starts producing fines.
3. Size the bore for velocity, not just for the pump flange
Suction lines want low velocity. Matching the hose bore to the pump inlet is the usual shortcut, but on a long suction run with any lift, going one size up reduces friction loss and protects the prime. Because working pressure is a flat 10 bar / 150 psi at every bore in the range, moving up a size costs nothing in pressure rating. Eleven water suction hose sizes from 19 mm to 203 mm give a fine enough ladder to do this properly.
4. Decide coil length and end connections
Standard water suction hose supply is 20 metre coils, with 10 or 20 metres available at 8 inch. Hose can be supplied with or without end connections to your specification, so cam and groove couplings or flanges can be fitted before despatch. On a dewatering contract with many identical pump sets, having the assemblies made up saves more site time than the fittings cost. For pressure lines above 10 bar the answer is a braided hose from the UAE industrial hose range rather than a larger suction hose.
